Hyperthermic Perfusion Therapy

Regional perfusion is a way to deliver
chemotherapy drugs to tumors in parts of the
body that can be isolated from the circulatory system. The arms and legs are most frequently isolated. Techniques of isolation of the liver and
lung recently have been developed.
The first reported use of this technique was in 1950, when nitrogen mustard was infused into
the arteries supplying blood to tumors while the
veins returning the blood were blocked. This maximized the exposure of the tumor to the chemotherapy drug.
